The startup has already received nearly 130,000 reservations for its Terra pickup and Traveler SUV.
Scout Motors’ upcoming Terra pickup and Traveler SUV aren’t in production yet, but the company already knows who its buyers are. Interest is high, and early figures suggest what the brand’s first chapter might look like.
According to CEO Scott Keogh, over 80 percent of reservations are for the range-extended electric powertrain. As EV infrastructure improves, EREV powertrains may prove to be the best option for now.
“Look, the market has spoken,” Keogh told Bloomberg. “Over 80 percent of buyers have opted for the version that includes the range extender.”
This figure means that at least 104,000 of the 130,000 customers have chosen a version that combines electric drive with a small gasoline engine that acts as a generator, suggesting that many Americans still prefer long-distance flexibility over all-electric purity.
Both vehicles share a modular architecture that can support either an all-electric powertrain or an EREV setup. The pure electric version will use a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery with a capacity of approximately 120 kWh, providing an estimated 350 miles (563 km) of range. How the Systems Differ
The range-extended model, on the other hand, uses a smaller lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) pack with roughly half the capacity, allowing for approximately 150 miles (241 km) of all-electric driving.
When the charge is depleted in the EREV, a small gas-powered onboard generator will kick in and power the battery. In this way, the EREV will offer a range of approximately 500 miles. Keogh hinted that Scout might prioritize the EREV at launch due to higher demand: “Generally, in life you want to meet market needs… We’ll probably focus more on the EREV, but we haven’t announced anything yet.”
Both versions will be built at Scout’s new $2.3 billion factory in Blythewood, South Carolina, where production is slated to begin in late 2027. Interestingly, Keogh believes EVs are the future.
“The world is still moving towards electric,” he said. “The innovation and fresh thinking are already in place. We want to make sure that Scout is ready for the next 100 years. We’re not building a two-year brand.”
It will be interesting to see how developments between now and 2027 shape Scout’s approach, and whether the initial demand for flexibility will ultimately shift to full electrification once the infrastructure finally catches up.
