Ford is back on the Nürburgring with a new and even more extreme Mustang GTD, built with one clear goal — to reclaim the lap record from the Corvette. After losing its edge earlier this year, the Blue Oval is taking no chances in fine-tuning its performance machine.
The latest prototype of the Mustang GTD has been spotted undergoing testing at the Green Hell. This new version features several aerodynamic improvements, including rear aerodiscs, mid-mounted canards, and a redesigned hood with added vents. These changes are aimed at improving downforce and stability through the track’s high-speed corners.

Spy shots also reveal subtle chassis refinements and possibly a modified exhaust system, which sounds different from earlier test models. Engineers are reportedly experimenting with various setups to push the car’s limits while maintaining compliance with track noise regulations.
Ford’s Mustang GTD previously clocked an impressive Nürburgring lap time of 6:52.072 back in May — over five seconds quicker than its earlier record. But the celebration didn’t last long. Chevrolet soon responded with the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X, setting faster times of 6:50.763 and 6:49.275.

Despite the Corvette’s lower price tag, Ford’s leadership remains determined to bring the title back. CEO Jim Farley has reportedly greenlit a more aggressive development plan to ensure the Mustang GTD dominates once again.
The golden Nürburgring decal seen on the latest prototype hints at a potential performance package if testing results meet expectations. With the upcoming model’s refinements, Ford aims not only to surpass the Corvette but also to cement the Mustang as the benchmark for American performance cars.
While some may question Ford’s priorities amid ongoing recalls, there’s no doubt the Mustang GTD represents the company’s relentless pursuit of speed and engineering excellence.
